Overview
Agu is a boy who still has a boy's curiosity and humor when the civil war arrives and takes everything from him. Swept into the ranks of a rebel militia in an unnamed West African nation, he finds himself answering to a charismatic and terrifying commander, learning to survive in ways that quietly erase who he used to be. Cary Fukunaga's film is unflinching but never exploitative, charting the slow, terrible distance between innocence and complicity.
